P.E. / Health

Castlemaine North Primary School offers a Physical Education program for all grades as a specialist area with a specialist teacher. This takes the form of at least one session per week per class in addition to games, sports and other outside activities that classroom teachers provide for their own class.

The focus of our P.E. program is of inclusion and participation. Each session has a routine to enable familiarity and comfort for all.
As well as the class and specialist Physical Education programs, Castlemaine North provides many other opportunities for students. Some of these include:

  • Inter-school netball, AFL, kickball, basketball and cricket competitions
  • Orienteering
  • Tabloid sports day
  • Cross country sports day (in-school, inter-school and regional competitions)
  • Outside coaching from AFL Country Victoria, Cricket Australia
  • Athletics sports day.

Each student is catered for in an individual manner and is given space and encouragement to not only try new movements and activities in a safe environment but also to contribute to the growth of others. Our philosophy is that collaboration and teamwork are vital components of well-rounded global citizens who can deal with challenges and not be defeated by initial failure. Success comes to those who are resilient and through practice we all gain better skills and attitudes towards achievement.

Castlemaine North also participates in the Active After School Communities Program. Each term, two sports coaching sessions per week are available to all students, free of charge. The sessions run for seven weeks each term from 3.25 – 4.45pm and have included sports and activities such as tennis, lawn bowls, AFL football, netball, Zumba, Basketball, golf and cricket.

Students in Years 1 to 6 participate in a swimming program in December each year. The focus of the program is to increase water safety awareness and to further develop swimming and survival skills in and around the water. All instructors are Austswim qualified.
